at the crossroads

It´s time to pause for a moment ...

Let me briefly introduce myself: I am Judith Roth, I am a Human Resources Professional, I worked in different roles, many of them global roles, mostly in the finance sector and always around Training, Development, Talent management and lately also in the recruiting space. At the beginning of the year I became self-employed and offer career advice, training, consulting, coaching, talent management, recruiting and support as an interim manager.

I am also the founder of BreakYourPattern, which I launched in January 2021. As mentioned earlier, the idea for Break Your Pattern came through a few personal experiences over the past couple of years. Changing life doesn’t always mean to do some sport, lose some weight, stop smoking. It is often much deeper. For example, if someone had a burnout and would therefore move jobs he would probably fall in the same traps again very soon. So, I thought if there would be a platform were people could meet likeminded, find some self-study material, relevant content and get also contact to experts, how wonderful would that be. My website and the start is going very well. We have already more then 30 courses available, approx. 10 forum discussion groups, more than 100 pages free content and some professional experts.

"How we manage to achieve what we set out to do!"

Author: Judith Roth

Do you sometimes feel like you know very well that you have to change something, but in the end convenience wins out and the consideration of the changes doesn't go beyond pure thought? I often feel the same way, especially when it comes to fundamental changes, such as looking for a new job, or tackling fundamental things consistently. At the beginning I am still full of motivation and drive, but when I think about it for a longer time, I realise how much strength and energy the change costs or that the implementation is not that easy and then I talk to myself about the current situation again "Nice" with sentences like "... but it also has many advantages...", "... it's not that bad..." and so on.

It is sometimes similar to new ideas. At the beginning I'm still full of euphoria and then the first major hurdles stand in my way during implementation and the joy of implementing the idea is clouded and at some point completely discarded.

Only when the pressure is so great, as in the example of the new job, when a restructuring is pending and your own job is no longer available, then you usually approach the professional change very consistently, you are also more or less forced.

It's amazing how great the suffering sometimes has to be before we move and change something in our lives.

But why is that the case?
It is often because we give up too early when there are difficulties and the first resistance! Many of our good ideas and approaches are not implemented because we do not (or cannot) pursue them with the necessary consistency.

Was it then naive of us to pursue change in our life or our ideas and follow our vision at all? No of course not! This curiosity, enthusiasm, the desire to want to change something and with it the so-called naivety is absolutely necessary. If we always knew in advance what effort, what energy and what resistance a change or the implementation of our idea would mean, we would never start it.

Consistency means never giving up! It also means never reducing your own standards or changing our goal, even against resistance and when things get difficult.

Hold on to your ideas, your beliefs and fight your way through. But why do we often find it so difficult to act and remain consistent? Why do we often need a lot of external pressure until we finally start tackling and implementing profound changes? Why

I believe that "fear" is often the cause! I encounter the following four types of "fear" myself:

1. Fear of your own courage
Every now and then we lose the belief that we will keep the feeling for right & wrong and necessary or unnecessary as an important benchmark during the implementation. Being successful means staying true to your own ideas and consistently turning them into reality.

2. Fear of hurting others
Making decisions usually also means that other people in our environment - be it professionally or privately - are also affected by the change. None of us would like to hurt others. But it would be much more fatal and, in my view, all the more reprehensible to end it short-term reluctance (of the right thing) to protect people from what is necessary until there is no other way out. Instead of being consistent from the start, our inhibitions mean that our inconsistency causes more damage than necessary - for our department, for our team, for those affected and for us!

3. Fear of getting things rolling
We are afraid of the judgement of "the others": other managers, employees, partners, etc. Because once the stones have started rolling, they can rarely be stopped. “The others” are never a good advisor. Trust in yourself!

4. Fear of failure
We want to succeed and fear failure or simply doing the wrong thing. Therefore it is important to weigh up the pros and cons, make a decision and listen to your gut - and then act consistently! If the sceptics in your environment make life difficult for you with their concerns and spread doubts, then simply stay true to yourself.

To make sure that your change process works out - and not only when it is actually too late or the pressure to change is too big - here are my three consistency principles which may help you as well:

Consistency means responsibility
Be aware of your responsibility and don't confuse consistency with toughness. If, under pressure, instead of being consistent, you slip into unnecessary harshness, you lose the most. It is much better to act very consistently in good times and to act openly, honestly, transparently and appreciatively and humanely. Consistency is clear, but not hard!

Ensure "speed"
Things don't get better by waiting, on the contrary: the longer you wait, the worse it gets. The longer things are put off, the greater the negative consequences of a lack of consistency. Act as early as possible. The time for change is usually earlier than you think! Listen to your intuition and follow it.

Where nothing happens, if nothing happens, nothing happens
Inconsistency is contagious. Once you have started to no longer pursue your change with the necessary sustainability, then it will quickly turn into one time, then another and then maybe a longer break for the first time... A certain laxity then takes hold to all change activities too quickly. Then it is "normal" that pending tasks and activities are no longer seriously pursued and are not completed. Successful changes are only possible if you ensure consistency and reliability, both small and large.

If you leave your fears behind and live the three principles of consistency, you will be able to amaze yourself with the courage and energy of change you are capable of! Sometimes you may have to choose a different path to achieve a goal, but keep the goal itself firmly in focus! You will get there!
