“You need to change your life?!” - An idea is born!

A couple of years ago I faced a serious family situation with my father when he had multiple Heart attacks just in five days and for 48 hours it wasn’t clear if he would survive. We as a family went through a dramatic time. The next three month after that I spent quite some time with him to support him to recover. We had very intense conversations about his circumstances and the doctors’ recommendations and advices. One sentences which seemed a common thread through all his consultations with the doctors was “You need to change your life!”.
My father was before a very strong and powerful Manager, formerly a Head of HR, Member of the Management Board, later then Self-employed running very successfully his own business, ok he didn’t live a very healthy life so did not much sport, did smoke for some times, liked good food and enjoyed it, didn’t sleep enough. However that was the obvious things to change and in its sense very easy. Stop smoking; lose some weight, sign up for the gym …. Next to his bed in hospital there was a 30 year old young man. Slim, no smoking, lots of sport, good sleeps, healthy lifestyle. He got also told by the doctors that he needs to change his life. But both got no advice where to start, where to look, what to change! Searching through the internet and talking to the people it seemed very coincidentally what recommendations and advice you found. Should it be more physically or more mentally? Starting a therapy or some coaching?  ….. Thinking about that my brain starting to work and first ideas sparkled in my mind!

A year after I met with one of my best friends in life for a holiday trip in Vietnam. She had sent me a text in July saying she needs to change something in her professional life and she needs a break and some mental refreshment to get a clear mind and inspirations. So very spontaneously we booked the trip to Vietnam. When I got off the plane and in the cab I immediately knew that this was also for me the perfect break! Such a different culture, so many inspirations from so many angles …. Whilst exploring this amazing country from north to the south we spoke in many conversations about challenges to get out of current mind patterns, start the thinking completely new and open in order to develop new ideas and approaches in life. We easily get so used to our current pattern that we hardly can break them.

Whilst listening to her and reflecting by myself one of my ideas got more and more clear to me and I got really excited about it:
I want to develop a platform for all those people who are looking for a significant change in life either because they had a life threatening experience such as heart attacks, cancer, burn out or an accident or because they realised that their current life isn’t fulfilling and what they want for the rest of their life!!
I very quickly knew how I would call it! So I secured the web page for me, wrote down my ideas in a requirements document and found an IT Developer who helped me with the coding and the development. And now we are here!

Editorial‍ - "Crisis"

Crisis

“Cheer up - especially when the water is up to your neck” - What are crises and how can they used?

The year 2020 was for all of us really tough!! And even 2021 will still bei full of challenges. The life we were used to up to then was completely unhinged by the COVID 19 situation and habits that we had grown fond of could no longer be maintained. For many, the crisis has brought job loss, excessive demands in everyday life and with the new situation, isolation and loneliness and existential fear.

This article is about the definition of crises and the opportunities that a crisis can offer. A crisis does not just consist out of failure and decline. Crises also have winners and they release energies that can be used to tackle changes. Are you taking advantage of the potential of a crisis or being paralyzed by the danger?

A crisis is not the downfall

The derivation of the Greek (crisis = decision, escalation) reveals: It is a situation in which a decision is required, not the downfall (Greek catastrophe). What they have in common is that they need the right choices and more effort, and they can produce positive results. Crises, and the difficult times that accompany them, are just as much a part of everyday life as they are successes - our perception only treats them in a completely different way: we perceive times of crisis as threatening and dominant. They are quite natural in private as well as in professional life and quite common. Whether the crisis of meaning, financial crisis or relationship crisis, no matter what you call them, they are just waiting to be overcome. During our adult life many crisis phases occur. Each of them seems crippling and bad.

And every crisis offers you exactly two options: Either you decide to stand in your own position during the difficult time, or you actively shape the future. Those who use their energy to respond to the crisis with change and to embrace personal development eventually emerge stronger. The competition, which has merely limited itself to creeping, remains behind.

Crisis use measures

Crises are like earthquakes - big changes seem to roll over each fate like massive earth plates. This leads to drastic destruction and changes. But it also creates energy - so to speak, the frictional heat. And with this "heat of battle" old structures can be thawed. A common model of change management compares the traditional structures with frozen water. Changes must melt this ice first and implement the necessary changes before the ice is frozen again. Many situation and processes, but also our own behaviour are frozen: "We always do it that way". Many prefer to suffer in suboptimal conditions for a long time, rather than trying to change once and for all. The professional world speaks here of the readiness, for years to accept a relatively high suffering pressure, before it finally comes to changes.

In change management, one speaks of the preservation manager, who defends the old rules, is mentally blocked and sees a danger in every renewal. In contrast, the change manager is looking for opportunities for optimization; he wants to take advantage of opportunities and is mentally open to new ideas. The danger here is to fall into blind activism and to prefer short-term successes over long-term ones. So it's important to find the balance between stagnation and over-hasty change: regular reflection of one's own methods and the gathering of opinions from outsiders.

Benchmarking instead of brainstorming

Once the experts in politics or a company sit together in a crisis round, two things are often discussed: where are the current problems coming from and what can we do to improve our situation?

However, one question is often overlooked: What have others already successfully done in similar situations or what doe others try out? Nobody should be too bad to adapt successful methods and measures from others even if it is the competition.

Some development teams refrain from diffuse and non-binding brainstorming when designing new products, and instead rely on analysing others' solutions. At the same time, solutions of completely different branches are considered. Even nature as an admirable master builder is recognized as an example and imitated. It then determines which aspects of the considered solution are to be applied for one's own optimization.

So sign in or sign up to www.BreakYourPattern.net and start networking with likeminded people and other users and learn from each other! There is so much power in it! Get inspiration, new ideas and approaches; hear from others what helped them the most and what didn’t work out. Find out that you are not alone in those situations and that others successfully came out of those! You could also look to find a virtual coach and schedule some sessions with him if you feel an expert would be also beneficial and helpful for your journey.

Your challenges are then tackled with a lot of energy, because: When the water is up to your neck, only one thing helps: Head up!
